What We’ve Lost in Modern Strength Training

Strength training is often approached as a pursuit of more weight, more volume, and faster results, with far less attention paid to how the body actually moves, stabilizes, and adapts under load. 

Lifting becomes a numbers game—focused on PRs, programs, and external markers—rather than a practice rooted in quality movement and long-term capability. Many people train consistently and work hard for years, yet still struggle with nagging injuries, joint pain, or recurring setbacks that interrupt progress. Poor technique, rushed progression, and an overreliance on machines or rigid, one-size-fits-all programs can create the appearance of strength while quietly reinforcing inefficient movement patterns and excessive stress on the body. Over time, knees, shoulders, and lower backs begin to pay the price.

Empowered Strength treats strength training as a skill: one that must be learned, practiced, and refined with intention over time. 

True strength is not just about how much you lift, but how well you move, how efficiently you generate tension, and how intelligently you progress. Using time-tested methods such as kettlebells, bodyweight training, and free weights, we emphasize proper technique, breathing, posture, and controlled progression.

These “old-school” tools are not outdated! They are powerful precisely because they demand coordination, awareness, and accountability from the lifter. When applied correctly, they build strength that reinforces joint health, movement efficiency, and resilience rather than breaking the body down.

Meet your coach:
John Odden

While you may know me as a Scottish Highland Games athlete, stone lifter, or strength coach. I started out as a tall, skinny, awkward kid who always lacked confidence, especially in the gym. After begging my parents to get some home equipment, I got my first set of plastic-covered cement weights from Target when I was 12. 

Somehow my fascination with improving my health, fitness, and athleticism turned into a persistent passion. Unfortunately, some misguided enthusiasm resulted in chronic back and shoulder injuries that sidelined my athletic career and limited my quality of life well into my 30s. 

So, I dove into my quest to learn as much as possible about the body with the help of mentors, tireless self study, constant personal practice, certifications, and a degree in Exercise Science along the way. Unknowingly, these injuries and setbacks would turn into what fuels me in teaching others to live an empowered, pain-free, active life. I love sharing the strength and movement principles that I have created and honed in my 20+ year career.
