Modern life rarely demands the calm focus, posture, and coordinated movement that archery naturally develops through deliberate practice.
Empowered Strength teaches archery as a foundational human skill that unites breath, posture, awareness, and controlled movement into a single purposeful action.
Through consistent practice, archers develop not only greater accuracy, but a deeper sense of calm, coordination, and confidence that carries into daily life, training, and the outdoors.
Modern training and daily life rarely ask us to slow down, focus completely, and integrate the body and mind into a single, deliberate action.
Much of modern movement is rushed, distracted, or disconnected from meaningful physical practice. Attention is divided, posture deteriorates, and physical awareness becomes increasingly passive rather than intentional. For many people, this appears as poor shoulder health, excess tension, inconsistent movement patterns, and difficulty remaining calm and focused under pressure. Even physically capable individuals often struggle to stay mentally present and coordinated when precision matters. In archery, these issues become impossible to ignore. Flinching, target panic, inconsistent shooting, collapsing posture, and mental frustration all reveal a disconnect between intention and execution.
“I came to John with a seemingly impossible challenge: I wanted to transform myself from a guy with a broken down back into a healthy Highland Games athlete.”
—Chance Whiteley
Many archers attempt to solve these problems by shooting more arrows or forcing better performance through repetition alone. But without a structured process, practice can easily reinforce compensation patterns, tension, and inconsistency rather than correct them. The result is often frustration, stalled progress, and a feeling that the body and mind are working against each other instead of together.
Beyond performance itself, something deeper has also been lost. For most of human history, archery was not simply recreation or sport. It was a discipline tied to survival, focus, self-reliance, and a direct relationship with the natural world. Today, many people feel disconnected from those experiences entirely, lacking opportunities to practice patience, awareness, and purposeful action in a meaningful environment.
Archery at Empowered Strength is taught as a foundational human skill: one that develops precision, awareness, posture, breath control, and intentional movement together through disciplined practice.
Using both traditional and modern archery methods, coaching focuses on building a repeatable shot process that keeps the archer calm, grounded, and fully present. Rather than simply correcting missed shots, instruction addresses the underlying causes of inconsistency including posture, shoulder mechanics, breathing patterns, tension management, and mental focus. Archery becomes more than aiming at a target; it becomes a practice of coordination, awareness, and control.
Training is structured to develop long-term physical integrity alongside technical skill. Drawing and controlling a bow demands stability, balanced movement, strength, and precision working together as one system. Over time, students develop healthier movement patterns, improved focus, greater confidence under pressure, and a deeper understanding of how the body generates controlled force with efficiency rather than strain.

Whether practiced for recreation, competition, bow hunting, or personal development, archery provides a rare opportunity to reconnect with a timeless human practice rooted in patience, discipline, and capability. It encourages people to step outdoors, engage with nature, and develop skills that feel tangible, grounded, and meaningful.
The result is not only better shooting, but a deeper sense of confidence and harmony between body and mind. Strength feels more controlled, movement becomes more intentional, and focus carries beyond the range into training, outdoor pursuits, and everyday life.
While you may know me as a Scottish Highland Games athlete, stone lifter, or strength coach. I started out as a tall, skinny, awkward kid who always lacked confidence, especially in the gym. After begging my parents to get some home equipment, I got my first set of plastic-covered cement weights from Target when I was 12.
Somehow my fascination with improving my health, fitness, and athleticism turned into a persistent passion. Unfortunately, some misguided enthusiasm resulted in chronic back and shoulder injuries that sidelined my athletic career and limited my quality of life well into my 30s.
So, I dove into my quest to learn as much as possible about the body with the help of mentors, tireless self study, constant personal practice, certifications, and a degree in Exercise Science along the way. Unknowingly, these injuries and setbacks would turn into what fuels me in teaching others to live an empowered, pain-free, active life. I love sharing the strength and movement principles that I have created and honed in my 20+ year career.
